Sustainability

Most commercial sun screens use substances that are dangerous for marine life, corals and wild life in general. We think, that it’s silly to poison our playgrounds, our mountains and our oceans with compounds that can harm it forever. Standard chemical sunscreens use substances like oxybenzone, that even in very low concentration harms marine life. Non coated NANO particles of zinc oxide or titanium oxide aren’t any better. With all that in mind we reached a conclusion; as far as science goes these days bulk form of zinc oxide is the safest for the environment. Let us explain you why how we reached this conclusion.

What is oxybenzone and why YOU should care about it.

Oxybenzone is a chemical compound and it is the most common chemical UV filter used in sun screens today. According to EWG, oxybenzone is found in 80% of chemical sunscreens on the market and it is estimated to be detected in 96% of American population. EWG rated oxybenzone 8/10 on toxicity rating. Translated to regular English: Oxybenzone is one of the most toxic ingredients in cosmetic industry.

Oxybenzone belongs to a class of chemicals that mimic human hormones and it has been INCREASINGLY linked to problems such as early puberty, low sperm count as well hormone–related cancers. But it is not only human well-being that is of concern; Oxybenzone is highly toxic when it comes in contact with marine life and wild life in general. Oxybenzone creates reef bleaching that causes the death of the coral. Scientists have proven that a single drop of Oxybenzone will have an impact on coral in an area equivalent to 6 Olympic size swimming pools. With up to 15 000 tons of sunscreen washed into the sea in popular tourist destinations this represents a GLOBAL environmental problem.

It is proven that up to 25% of sunscreen is washed off the skin within the first 20 min after application. But washing off is not only way how oxybenzone gets into the environment; in tests traces of the chemical were detected in user’s urine within 30 minutes after application. The chemical then easily passes through modern sewage treatment systems and enters the sea. As well as corals, oxybenzone is toxic to algae, sea urchins, fish and sea mammals. Both dolphin and human mothers can transfer oxybenzone to their infants via breastmilk. Other toxins such as methoxycinnamate and camphors are on the SIN (SUBSTITUTE IT NOW) list of International Chemical Secretariat. Other compounds that are derived from mineral oil–PARABENS are used in cosmetic industry as preservatives. Silicon polymers, cyclic siloxanes as well as parabens are NON-biodegradable and potentially toxic to marine life.
